What's up with moving the facades incrementally further back from the street. Looks shifty to me, like they're setting up for a suburban-style back of the lot property next lot over.
I'd be interested to see what they do with the back of the buildings. Presumably, the building third from the right extends deeper into the lot than the two next to it. Wonder what they did with those exposed corners back there?
I will investigate for you. If you look carefully at the top left of the far right building, there is white (concrecte?) exposed behind the Mansard Roof. Not good.
The setbacks DO occur in historical neighborhoods, but it looks very contrived here.

Perhaps the zoning variance overlooked the setback.
