Kalona, Iowa
Kalona, Iowa, is buried in the hills southwest of Iowa City, and is famous for its Amish and Mennonite communities. The downtown is small, not terribly ornate, but it is 100% occupied with good stores, including a great bakery. It seems the town might be becoming a tourist destination, as a "Tuscan" Italian restaurant has opened, surely a sign of higher rollers coming to buy quilts and other goods.
Just north of town on IA-1 is a cheese factory where they sell squeaky-fresh squeaky cheese.
ReplyDeleteMake sure to get some.
Boy, that MUST be a prosperous town! That "street" looks like the apron at an airport!
ReplyDeleteI sure hope that area is not the source of the "hand-made Amish cabinets" that surround those scammy electric "room heaters" that so many of those sleazebag TV and print commercials shout. Hmmm - since it's getting cooler, I guess we are about to see Bob Vila, et al, touting them soon.
Those are definitely not Amish in those ads.
