Barretts Elementary
Apparently there's been a school at this location since 1895, but the current Barretts Elementary dates from the 1930's. Sitting at Carman and Dougherty Ferry Roads, the school has been a fixture for over a century.
Back in the early '50s, my parents belonged to a square dancing group that used to meet there. Most of the participants were from Kirkwood and I never knew why they had the dances at this school. This was long before the Parkway School District was formed; I dunno what "district" Barretts was part of - I presume it fed kids into the Kirkwood High School system. While I grew up just West of Ballas and East of Greenbriar CC, this school was REALLY out in the boonies - I mean, no street lights and it was DARK at night! As to the square dancing - we kids were bored out of our gourds...
