I stumbled upon this great street of modernist houses in the Meramec Highlands area of Kirkwood, a stone's throw away from I-270. They are all unique, but I captured two of the more interesting ones.
I love the use of stone in this house to give the impression of a mesa or rocky outcropping on both the side of the house and the chimney.
This other house makes great use of a massive rubble masonry wall that continues from the outside into the interior of the house, much as Frank Lloyd Wright pioneered.
Much to my chagrin, a McMansion has already replaced one of the houses on this unique street, demolishing all the mature trees in the yard in the process. Talk about a typical example of destroying what makes a neighborhood desirable in the process of relocating to it.

I am a little confused with the comments and the photos. The comment on the McMansion, is that related to the photo of the house with the pick up in the drive way? That house is owned by the architect who designed the home and a few surrounding it. I guess you are referring to a home towards to top of the street?
ReplyDeleteYes, the house with the pick-up truck is most definitely not a McMansion. I don't want to offend anybody, but I just really feel that larger, newer house does not fit in well with its neighbors.
